The massive episode of alleged cyber espionage targeting around sixty pro-independence politicians and activists, journalists, and lawyers has brought espionage into focus. How does Selva Orejón interpret this espionage crisis?

Catalangate was uncovered thanks to Citizen Lab, the cybersecurity group at the University of Toronto, which secretly investigated for 21 months. The coordinator of this report, John Scott-Railton, considers this to be just the tip of the iceberg.

Selva Orejón emphasizes that “back in July 2021, there was already discussion about the leaks that had become public after learning of Pegasus infections on the mobile devices of some members of the Catalan government, but not only Catalan politicians—Pegasus had also been used to spy on other political leaders from other European states.”
