The actress and presenter of Versión Española, Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, has reported the hacking of her social media and subsequent extortion.

Experts warn that cybercriminals are increasingly refining their ‘modus operandi’.

“They attack accounts via a direct message from another account that was already following them, which is why they operate in a chain,” explains Selva Orejón, founder and CEO of onBRANDING, to RTVE.es, adding that they are particularly targeting all accounts linked to the film industry, especially verified accounts, because they impersonate Instagram’s technical support service.

Their objective is to subsequently sell the accounts on the black market to obtain funding for their illicit activities. Orejón, who is also a professor at the National Police Academy, states that an account with 80,000 followers sells for $70 on the black market; a figure that rises to $875 if it has one million followers and can reach $13,000 if it has 15 million ‘followers’.”
