How to avoid scams when shopping online? Considering both Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the Catalan Consumer Agency has issued guidelines to prevent fraud and impulsive purchases.

In statements to Catalunya Ràdio, Selva Orejón warns of a technique increasingly used by cybercriminals: telephoning individuals, impersonating companies like Amazon, and informing them that they will receive an SMS to confirm a purchase or fees.

“If the person has been shopping on Amazon, when they receive the call and then the SMS, they fall for it,” she comments.

Orejón advises “never” to pay with a credit or debit card. “I would use either a payment system like PayPal or a cyber card, which is a prepaid card. Always have an anti-malware system and never buy from websites or applications that you do not truly trust.”

The Mossos recommend checking reviews, ensuring purchases are made from official websites, and comparing prices with other sites.
