It was then, during the months of lockdown, that scams, cyber extortion, and the theft and subsequent sale of social media accounts “experienced a boom, which continues to have repercussions”. This is explained by Selva Orejón, founder and CEO of OnBranding, a company dedicated to identity management, reputation, and the protection of individuals and businesses online.

According to Orejón, this past weekend saw a new wave of hacks and/or attempted hacks affecting hundreds of Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok accounts—both celebrity users and private individuals. In fact, the author of this piece was the victim, just a few days ago, of an attempted intrusion on one of the aforementioned social networks. Although these intrusions have been taking place gradually since last March, recently some celebrities have made them public in order to raise their followers’ awareness of the criminal practices being carried out via the Internet.
