The internet is a sieve for all types of counterfeits sold without any oversight, despite years of efforts by brands, the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office), the OECD, and State Law Enforcement Agencies.
Globally, the sales volume of counterfeit goods already exceeds $500 billion (€511 billion), equivalent to 3.3% of global trade.
The Director General of the Association for Brand Defense (Andema), Gerard Guiu, expresses concern because “50% of young people between 15 and 25 admit to having purchased a product knowing it was counterfeit.”
As Selva Orejón denounces in the interview given to El Economista, “entire containers, especially of clothing, are arriving from China to Turkey with counterfeits to be subsequently distributed via small parcels throughout Europe.”
