“The National Police has detected that groups of criminals are already trying to commit a form of fraud known as phishing, taking advantage of the lockdown in Spain. “Cybercriminals can take advantage of the State of Alarm to find new victims. If you receive this message asking you to change your account password, do not take the bait,” they warn in a message posted on their official Twitter account. The first cases detected by the police involve fake Netflix messages asking citizens to change their passwords for security reasons, police sources explained to EL PERIÓDICO, noting that the coronavirus crisis has strongly fueled this attempt at deception.”

Selva Orejón, a cybercrime expert and director of the online reputation and cyber-investigation firm OnBranding, warns that, due to the home lockdown, we are all more exposed these days to becoming victims of this type of criminal. “There is now a much larger sector of the population constantly connected to the internet; being at home, there is no corporate supervision or specialized personnel on hand to tell you which websites are trustworthy. Many people did not have time to go to their workplace to get their corporate computer and are using their personal ones, which are usually not prepared to evade certain threats.” All these factors “increase the success of these information thieves,” emphasizes Orejón, who has been collaborating for years with the Mossos d’Esquadra and other police forces on digital security matters.
Her team has recently developed and shared a protocol to prevent phishing, with tips that anyone can apply to defend themselves against potential scams and fraud. The most important one: “we must enable two-factor authentication in the settings of all our social networks and applications. This means that when an intruder tries to access our account, a warning message will be sent to our electronic devices, requesting a code that only we will have, so the phisher will not be able to proceed.”
