Looking for love online can be very dangerous. Every year, thousands of victims are seduced and their bank accounts emptied by those known as romance scammers.

Last year alone, the US saw a record number of romance scams involving fake online relationships, a fraud that reached $547 million. Although this news comes from the US, the fact is that these types of scams are becoming increasingly common in Spain every day.

The predator knows how to select their victims very well; they are usually young, tech-savvy, and possess strong communication skills.

According to Selva Orejón, “we should be more on our guard when speaking with strangers on the internet.”

On occasion, there are also organized crime groups dedicated to romance scams; most of these groups are located in Nigeria, Ghana, or Ivory Coast.
