May 17 marks World Internet Day, and this week ‘En Portada’ premieres the report ‘Cryptotribe,’ an exploration of the metaverse, the transition to a more immersive Internet. A virtual universe in which people are represented by avatars and can interact with each other.

A team from the program explores this parallel world through those who are building it, buying and selling virtual land registered through blockchain technology, or creating intangible works of art that they trade with cryptocurrencies. People who, from different fields, are already inside the metaverse and form the “cryptotribe.” Experts in psychology, sociology, and fields such as cybersecurity and sexual education also participate to address the potential effects this immersive Internet may bring. The main concerns focus on its addictive potential, especially among adolescents, and the greater social isolation it could generate. Additionally, they fear that problems related to privacy and digital identity that already exist on the Internet today may be exacerbated.
